5 Behaviors of Toxic Masculinity You Should Avoid

As a man, you may prioritize having distinctly masculine personality traits. Some may do this in moderation, but others can take it to unhealthy extremes that cause hurt to themselves and those around them. Here are five behaviors of toxic masculinity you should avoid.

Not Showing Emotion

One of the key elements in the psychology behind toxic masculinity is that expressing emotion is unacceptable or a sign of weakness. But the belief that all men should be stoic and keep it all inside can be more hurtful than anything else. It can prevent them from seeking the mental health services they genuinely need.

Taking Risks

Another behavior of toxic masculinity you should avoid is taking risks to show your dominance or your lack of fear. Unfortunately, this behavior can make it more likely for men to become violent, drive dangerously, gamble, or even abuse drugs. It is better to play it safe so you don’t risk hurting yourself or others.

Being Controlling

Men who need the ultimate power in their domestic relationships are also engaging in toxic masculinity. This obsession can lead them to believe that they should make the final decisions or always know their partner’s location. Unfortunately, this will only make you controlling and hurtful in your relationship.

Engaging in Violence

Another symptom of toxic masculinity is engaging in acts of violence. Some men may be under the disturbing assumption that they must express their masculinity or show dominance through these acts. It can only lead to people getting hurt – as opposed to you earning their respect.

Avoiding Household Chores

Toxic masculinity also can drive men to reject duties that would help their partners around the house since they might consider them “too feminine.” Instead, your relationship will be healthier if you take on a substantial share of these chores. You will show your partner you want to contribute and help them take a load off.

Thankfully, not all men believe in or advocate these behaviors. But if more men are willing to avoid them and engage in healthy behaviors, it would help improve their lives and relationships.
