With the temperature dropping, it might be time to get your winter coat out of the closet to stay warm. However, you may notice some of the common wear and tear that can occur. Instead of throwing it out, here are some easy ways to repair a torn winter jacket that may help you extend the lifespan of your coat.
Clean and Coat
If you leave a jacket in storage, it’s normal for the zipper to stick or become difficult to use. This problem is often a simple fix, and there are many good reasons to repair the zipper yourself. Coating the zipper in oil or similar lubricant and cleaning out the teeth with a small brush is generally enough to get it moving again. If the problem is with the slider, zipper repair kits are inexpensive and easy to apply.
Needle and Thread
If your coat has a small rip or tear, one of the easiest ways to repair a torn winter jacket is with the classic needle and thread. We recommend flipping your coat inside out so all the stitchwork won’t be visible from the outside.
You want to slide your threaded needle through the same side of the fabric, bringing the pieces together and occasionally bringing the needle through the loop of your material to make a knot. Make two to three knots at the end and clip the fabric.
However, needle and thread are not great solutions for puffy coats, down jackets, or other typically waterproof options. Even the smallest holes made by the needlework may allow rain to leak inside.
Patches and Tape
If you have a hole in a puffy coat, one of the more common solutions is to use some fabric tape. You may find a colorful option that matches the coat or find a clear option to hold the torn pieces together. Waterproof fabric tape may not be the most aesthetically pleasing option for repairing a tear, but it’s a much more cost-effective and straightforward way to protect your coat from further damage.
